Craven Domestic Violence Service defines domestic abuse as:

The physical, emotional, financial and sexual abuse of an individual by known others, with whom they have had or are having a relationship.

The relationship need not necessarily be of a sexual/partner nature.

The abuse is always constraining and controlling and can affect people from any social class, race, physical ability, religion, age and sexual orientation. It can affect both men and women.
