How domestic abuse affects children

Violence against you can have immediate and long term effects on your children. It can control their lives and will often dictate what they can and cannot do. For children, the major consequence of living with domestic abuse is confusion and uncertainty. Some of the potential issues could be.
  • When will the next incident occur and what will the consequences be?

  • Will you be hurt again?

  • Will they have to move house and if so, where will they live?

  • Will they have to change schools and lose their friends and favourite teacher?

  • Who can they trust?

  • Will they see their grandparents and other relatives again?

  • What will happen to their pets? Children’s lives may be affected by domestic abuse before they are born.

  • Domestic abuse often starts or intensifies during pregnancy

  • Domestic abuse is associated with increases in rates of miscarriage, low birth weight, premature birth and foetal injuries and death

  • 40% of women state that domestic abuse started during pregnancy

  • 44% of abused women are assaulted when pregnant

  • The abuse may adversely affect the mothers relationship with her new born child
