Preparing to stay
If you remain in the house after separation or you move to a new home, these are some useful tips to keep yourself safe.
  • Install smoke detectors and fire extinguishers

  • Tell a neighbour about your situation and ask them to call the police if they suspect anything. Show them a picture of the perpetrator, so they know who to look out for. If you have a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme, inform the co-ordinator

  • Notify work of your situation

  • Report any abuse of an injunction immediately, even if it seems innocent, such as a text message, or phone call

  • Get a cordless phone so you can carry it round the house and garden with you, or install an additional phone line upstairs. Keep important telephone numbers with you at all times

  • Use an answer machine to screen all calls. Dial 141 before dialling out or ask for your number to be unlisted

  • Always make sure a friend or family member knows your situation

  • Ask us for assistance if you need to change the door locks and install window locks or install an outside light which is activated when someone is near to the house. Fit extra bolts and locks and install a security system. The Police can help to make your home more secure.

  • Explain the situation to the children
